The Swiss government has announced its intention to join the European air defence system Sky Shield. Defence Minister Viola Amherd will sign an agreement in Bern on Friday, along with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner. The Swiss and Austrian governments will include a statement of their neutrality in the agreement. Sky Shield is a German-led initiative that currently includes 17 countries, including NATO members and non-NATO members. The initiative was launched in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and is modeled on the Israeli Iron Dome. The Swiss government hopes that joining Sky Shield will help to close existing gaps in Europe's air defence system.
