A man died on the spot after a three-vehicle accident on the A16 near Tavannes BE on Thursday. Three other people were injured, one of them seriously, according to the Berner Jura-Seeland prosecutor's office. The car was travelling from the Pierre-Pertuis tunnel towards the Sous-le-Mont tunnel when, for unknown reasons, it veered onto the opposite lane near a bridge crossing the highway. It then collided with a second car travelling in the opposite direction and then head-on with a third vehicle, a delivery van with a trailer, which tipped over onto the left side of the highway. Third parties immediately provided first aid, but the passenger of the first car could not be saved. The driver of the first car was flown to hospital with serious injuries, while the driver of the second car and a passenger in the third vehicle were slightly injured and taken to hospital by ambulance. The Bern cantonal police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
