Construction Expenditures Increase in 2022

In Switzerland, building expenditure increased in 2022, mainly due to private renovation projects, while public expenditure decreased. Overall, building expenditure increased by 1.5%, but due to rising building prices, there was a real decrease of 5.9%. Private investments increased by 7.2%, while public expenditure for new and renovation projects remained largely stable, but decreased by 1.4% for maintenance work. The additional investments were concentrated in the high-rise building sector, with an increase of 2.3%, while the total investment in the low-rise building sector decreased slightly by 0.1%. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the work in progress of building projects including public maintenance work increased by 1.6% as of December 31, 2022. In summary, building expenditure in Switzerland increased in 2022, mainly due to private renovation projects, while public expenditure decreased. Private investments increased significantly, while public expenditure for new and renovation projects remained largely stable, but decreased for maintenance work. The additional investments were concentrated in the high-rise building sector, with an increase of 2.3%, while the total investment in the low-rise building sector decreased slightly by 0.1%.
