In the Wallis region of Switzerland, more than ten outbreaks of acarine and four cases of foulbrood have been reported since spring. The canton has imposed a transport ban of bee hives within a two kilometre radius of the infected areas, as well as a 70 square kilometre quarantine zone. The affected areas are Visperterminen, Blatten, Saas-Almagell, Bettmeralp, Nendaz, Evolène, Vérossaz and Evionnaz, with Nendaz being affected by both acarine and foulbrood. The canton has been carrying out inspections of over 1000 bee hives in 150 bee houses in Nendaz, Evolène, Vérossaz and Evionnaz, with further inspections and some restrictions expected to be lifted soon. The two diseases can wipe out entire bee colonies, and the canton is reminding beekeepers of their registration requirement and to be vigilant and report any suspicious cases immediately.
