The Swiss military is currently comprised of around 147’000 conscripts.
The most recent relevant laws mandate the reduction of the armed forces to 100’000, with an effective maximum of 140’000. However, a transitional provision in the Military Act allowed for these numbers to be exceeded until the end of 2022.
According to a press release from the Federal Department of Defense (DDPS), thousands of alread-trained military personell would have to be released from service.
The Federal Council has weighed in on the planned reduction of staffing by saying that ‘In view of the current geopolitical situation, the Federal Council does not consider it opportune to reduce the effective level.’
They point specifically to the necessity to maintain a ‘sufficiently high effective level … in order to ensure sustainability in the event of longer-lasting deployments by means of replacements.’.
The DDPS has been tasked, therefore, with submitting a draft proposal to the Federal Council which would authorize the Federal Council to ‘exceed the statutory effective maximum number of military service conscripts for a certain period of time.’.
