Neuchâtel faces a harrowing ordeal as a devastating fire in La Chaux-de-Fonds leaves one gravely injured and others in peril, sparking an urgent investigation.
In a distressing incident in Neuchâtel, a person sustained serious injuries following a fire outbreak in an apartment building in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, causing widespread concern. Neuchâtel cantonal police provided details indicating that the victim attempted a perilous escape through a window on the fourth floor, leading to the injury.
Emergency calls reporting the fire were logged just before 3 p.m., as per Neuchâtel authorities. The rapid spread of the blaze engulfed several apartments, forcing residents to seek escape. In a desperate move, one individual fell from the fourth floor, resulting in severe injuries.
The aftermath saw the injured individual airlifted to a hospital for urgent care. Additionally, a firefighter suffered a hand injury during the firefighting operations. Ambulance services tended to 23 other individuals affected by the incident.
In the wake of the tragedy, displaced residents were temporarily accommodated in a local gymnasium. Efforts led by the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds are underway to secure long-term lodging for those impacted.
The origins of the fire remain a subject of inquiry, with the relevant prosecutorial office initiating a full investigation into the cause.
