Palestine Protests Zurich became the epicenter of solidarity as over a thousand individuals gathered Saturday to support Palestinian rights. Despite the absence of official approval from the city, the demonstrators made their stand clear, sparking debate due to the coinciding Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The call to action by the Palestine Committee Zurich resonated strongly, advocating for an “end to genocide and occupation.” Helvetiaplatz bore witness to this robust assembly, united under the cause of a free Palestine. OCHA, a service of the United Nations have estimated 100,000 people are missing, dead or injured since October 7th.

The contentious slogan echoed through the crowd, yet speakers, including Jewish activists and representatives from Gaza families in Switzerland, clarified its intent of inclusivity and freedom, dismissing claims of anti-Semitism. The rally, lasting about 90 minutes, became a platform for expressing grievances against the alleged genocide in Gaza and the urgent plea for a ceasefire.

Amidst the sea of Palestine flags, calls for a “free, secular, and democratic Palestine” emerged, with groups like “Der Funke” and “Revolutionäre Aufbau” marking their presence. Despite the provocative nature of some messages, the rally proceeded peacefully under police watch without necessitating intervention.

The city’s decision to allow only a stationary rally, as opposed to a march, and the timing of Holocaust Remembrance Day, which was reportedly suggested by the city itself, added layers to the event’s backdrop. Parallel sentiments were echoed in Bern, where 400 participants rallied under Bern For Palestine’s banner, buoyed by the recent International Court of Justice’s demands for Israel to bolster protections for Palestinians. Earlier this month Bern held a similar protest.

Palestine Protests Zurich not only highlighted the enduring strife and aspirations of the Palestinian people but also underscored the complex interplay of memory, identity, and the quest for peace.
