The sharp rise in health insurance premiums has led to significant switching among policyholders. According to a survey by comparison service Comparis published on Wednesday, Vaud-based Assura lost 115,000 insured persons (-14%) last year. Since 2019, Assura has lost 320,000 basic policyholders, a drop of over 30%.

Swica was the second biggest loser with a loss of 45,100 policyholders (-5%). Bern-based insurer KPT also saw a slight decline, losing 6,500 insured persons. This follows a previous year where KPT had gained a record 195,100 customers.

The winner of the switching season was Lucerne-based Concordia, gaining 70,800 insured persons (11%). Groupe Mutuel from Valais followed with 63,000 new policyholders, and Zurich-based Sanitas added 40,000 policyholders.

The country’s two largest health insurers also recorded slight growth. CSS increased its number of insured persons by 29,500 to 1.53 million, and Helsana by 1,000 to 1.42 million.

A representative Comparis survey of 1,035 people in April 2024 revealed that only 24% of adults in Switzerland still have the standard model with free choice of doctor in their basic insurance. This figure dropped significantly after the second consecutive premium shock, down from 30%.

Demand for GP or HMO models has increased, with 53% opting for a model with a GP or group practice as the first point of contact.
