Ten years after the partially revised Spatial Planning Act came into force, three quarters of the municipalities have adapted or are currently adapting their land use plans. 173 municipalities have already rezoned building land. According to the Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE), the adjustment will take longer than expected.

The aim of the amendment to the law is to stop urban sprawl in order to stem the loss of agricultural land and natural landscapes. The ARE announced on Monday that the stricter requirements for determining the necessary building land had led to many municipalities having to rezone undeveloped building plots.

According to the ARE, 173 municipalities have so far transferred a total of 390 hectares of building land to the agricultural zone or designated it for other purposes. This corresponds to a square area with a side length of just under two kilometers. This figure will continue to rise until all municipalities have adapted their land use plans to the objectives of the first partial revision of the Spatial Planning Act.

The implementation of the Spatial Planning Act is taking longer than expected, writes the ARE. According to the cantons, it will be 2030 before all land use plans comply with the law. Reasons for this include a lack of resources or the challenging balancing of different interests.
