19.5 years in prison and expulsion from the country for murder in Basel

On Friday, the Basel-Stadt Criminal Court found a 25-year-old man guilty of murder and sentenced him to 19.5 years' imprisonment. This will be deferred in favor of inpatient psychiatric treatment.
The Croatian national is also banned from the country for ten years. The court concludes that he killed a 27-year-old man with a knife on the Lysbüchel site in Basel in August 2021. He must pay the deceased's relatives a six-figure sum in compensation.
The court also convicted him of attempted murder. A few weeks before the crime in Basel, the accused seriously injured another man in Zurich by cutting his head with a knife. The 25-year-old was consuming large quantities of cocaine, alcohol and steroids at the time and already had a criminal record for violent offenses
The young Croatian is also convicted of simple assault and violations of the Narcotics Act. He was acquitted of the offense of stealing several cell phones. The verdict is not yet final.
