According to police estimates, 25,000 carnival enthusiasts took the opportunity to celebrate Lucerne's carnival kick-off early on Thursday morning. That's roughly the same number as last year, when the Fritschi day watch attracted a record crowd.

The first few hours of the Lucerne carnival were peaceful, said Christian Bertschi, spokesman for the Lucerne police, when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency early on Thursday morning.

Two people were reported for violating the Explosives Act, said Bertschi. This was because they had set off pyrotechnics. Shortly before 6 a.m., the police were able to reopen the main traffic route over the lake bridge.

Meanwhile, Guggenmusigen, individual masks and groups parade through the streets of the city and enjoy the so-called fifth season. At 2 pm, the big Fritschi parade starts at the lake basin.
