According to the organizers, 3000 teachers demonstrated for better working conditions on Helvetiaplatz in Zurich on Saturday. The focus was on their demand for relief. High workloads would otherwise no longer be possible without health problems.

In addition, there are major problems in reconciling family and career, according to the trade union Verband des Personals öffentlicher Dienste (VPOD) and the collectives Kritische Lehrpersonen, Kritische Sozialarbeit and Trotzphase.

In order for the teaching profession to become more attractive again and for teachers to be able to provide a good education, they need relief. However, the professional mandate that has been in force in elementary school since 2017 has the opposite effect.

According to the four organizations, the 2022 Pisa survey showed that the difference in performance between socially disadvantaged and privileged children has never been greater. Schools are robbing many children and young people of their future.

The protesters said that the Education Directorate's proposals for adapting the professional mandate were inadequate. The Directorate of Education must finally take effective measures against the overload.
