The 31st European Heritage Day attracted around 40,000 visitors on Saturday and Sunday. At over 400 different events, they were able to get an idea of the topic of networking in the historical and social context of cultural heritage.

The offer included guided tours, excursions, exhibitions, concerts and workshops, as the National Heritage Information Center (Nike), the coordinator, announced on Sunday. Around half of the visits took place in French-speaking Switzerland, it added.

This year's networking theme focused in particular on connecting routes, because exchange shapes history. In Bern, Zurich and Schaffhausen, for example, there were so-called Huguenot routes to discover, along which the reformed Protestants persecuted in France came to Switzerland.

Between Heiligkreuz and Schüpfheim in Lucerne, the focus was on the medieval pilgrimage route. Various workshops took visitors to the Roman Empire, for example in Martigny VS or Augusta Raurica (Kaiseraugst AG). In other areas, there was the world of railroads to experience, for example in Romanshorn TG, Interlaken BE and Erstfeld UR. In Stansstad NW, the focus was on the oldest section of highway in Switzerland.

The Heritage Days take place in 50 European countries. The Swiss program involves the specialist offices for monument preservation and archaeology, the Federal Office of Culture and numerous other institutions and private individuals involved in the field of cultural heritage. In 2023, 45,000 people attended the various events.
