A mobile museum to take Peter Bichsel’s work out into the world

On the fringes of the Solothurn Literature Days, the so-called Büro Bichsel was inaugurated on Saturday. This small space is to become the future center for the work of author Peter Bichsel in Solothurn. And from here, a mobile museum will travel throughout Switzerland and the world.
On Saturday, the namesake himself sat in front of the Bichsel office in Solothurn's Altstadtgasse, just behind the Kreuz restaurant: Peter Bichsel, surrounded by a good handful of people. Together they inaugurated this office, which is to become a center of remembrance of Bichsel's work from 24 March next year. This is when the author will celebrate his 90th birthday.
From then on, a mobile museum will go wherever young and old, seasoned and new readers of Bichsel's stories can be found. With his several hundred stories and columns, the author holds up a mirror to the world and raises questions that concern everyone: existential, social and political. On the surface, the stories are light, but they always have a deeper meaning, are complex and reflective.
The museum is to consist of mobile walls that can be set up anywhere. It will have a modular structure. Two modules are planned before Bichsel's 90th birthday: one on the topic of "Democracy (in crisis)" and another on "School, learning, solidarity". Later, one or two further modules will be added each year.
Behind Büro Bichsel is a group of people from the literary scene and from Bichsel's circle, which has recently been organized as an association. It works together with the Swiss Literary Archives, which looks after Bichsel's archive. Further collaborations are planned, for example with the Solothurn Literature Days, which Bichsel himself co-founded in 1978. On Saturday, he himself was very pleased with the activities dedicated to the future of his work.
