82 feature films from 24 countries will be screened at the Sundance Festival in the US state of Utah in January. The largest US film festival for independent productions will also feature a production with Swiss participation, as the organizers announced on Wednesday (local time).

The Swiss-Peruvian-Spanish co-production "Reinas" will be screened. The drama is running in the "World Cinema Dramatic Competition" category. The feature film tells the story of a daughter and her mother who plan to leave Peru for the USA in 1992.

The director is the Swiss-Peruvian dual citizen Klaudia Reynicke. She studied film in Lausanne and Geneva; "Reinas" is her third feature film. Her first "The Nest" screened at the Locarno Film Festival in 2016 and the second "Love Me Tender" in 2019, as well as at various other international film festivals.

Several stars present films

German productions are also taking part in the Sundance Festival. Among the ten candidates in the "World Cinema Documentary Competition" category is the documentary "Eternal You". The film by directing duo Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck ("The Cleaners") is celebrating its world premiere there.

The new feature film by director Nora Fingscheidt ("Systemsprenger"), who brought actress Saoirse Ronan in front of the camera for the book adaptation "The Outrun", will also have its world premiere at the festival. The drama tells the story of an alcoholic woman in London who returns to her Scottish home island of Orkney.

Every year, well-known actors and Hollywood directors also come to Park City. This year, stars such as Kristen Stewart, Michael Fassbender, Pedro Pascal, Jesse Eisenberg and US director Steven Soderbergh will be presenting their indie films.

Film festival as a springboard

For many smaller films, the Sundance Festival is a springboard for finding distributors and a wider audience. In 2021, for example, the deaf drama "Coda" won the top prizes from the jury and the audience, and later "Coda" was celebrated as "Best Film" at the Oscars.

The festival, founded by Robert Redford, is scheduled for January 18-28 in the Park City winter sports region. It is being held for the 40th time.

Since its beginnings, the festival has pursued the goal of presenting and celebrating risk-taking artists and bold projects, Redford said in a statement. This tradition will continue in 2024.
