A breakdown occurred during the relocation of the mobile construction site bridge "Astra Bridge" on Monday night. Traffic on the A1 highway is being diverted past the bridge, and the Kriegstetten entrance in the direction of Zurich will remain closed until Tuesday.
The Federal Roads Office (Astra) announced on Monday afternoon that an engine failed on one of the mobile gantries when the "Astra Bridge" was being moved. Although the problem had been localized, it could not be rectified.
As a result of the disruption, the construction site bridge could not be lowered and opened for traffic early Monday morning, according to Astra. Traffic is being guided past the bridge in two lanes, and the Kriegstetten entrance in the direction of Zurich had to be closed due to a lack of space.
Reopening on Tuesday
As a result, there were traffic jams on the roads in the area, as reported by various media. The defective engine will be repaired on Monday and the bridge will be moved again on Tuesday night so that the Kriegstetten exit can be reopened, according to Astra.
The road surface is being renewed under the mobile "Astra" bridge, which is around 280 meters long. Traffic rolls over the bridge. The permitted speed is 60 kilometers per hour. Once the renovation work under the bridge is complete, the bridge will move 100 meters further for the next section, controlled remotely by GPS. The cost of the prestigious Astra project has so far amounted to around CHF 26 million.
