Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, Valais winegrowers achieved a successful harvest in 2023 with above-average yields. With 45.7 million kilograms of grapes in the cellar, the harvest volume is comparable to 2019 and 2022 and is more than ten percent above the ten-year average.
This included 26 million kilograms of red grapes and 19.6 million kilograms of white grapes, as announced by the canton of Valais on Thursday. Overall, the natural sugar content of the 2023 vintage is comparable to the ten-year average.
According to the press release, the changeable weather conditions were challenging for the winegrowers. The beginning of spring was characterized by a period of intense humidity. The special conditions, in particular the heat waves in July and August, put the vines under stress in some places, which slowed down the development and ripening of the grapes. At the end of July, hail caused considerable damage locally in the affected regions.
The Valais winegrowers achieved their weakest harvest since records began in 1966 in 2021 with 22.7 million kilograms of grapes in the cellar.
