Swiss President Viola Amherd and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz hope that the peace conference on the Bürgenstock in June will be the first step towards peace. Both heads of government said this on Wednesday at a media event in Berlin following a visit by the President of the Swiss Confederation to the Federal Chancellor.

They discussed the peace process in connection with the war in Ukraine, as Amherd said. Among other things, the reconstruction of the country was also discussed. The Valais native also emphasized the close relations between Switzerland and Germany.

The planned peace conference in Switzerland was a successful process, said Scholz. Many specific issues had already been discussed at other meetings, including in Davos. Something must now come of this. The Chancellor also wished for a speedy and successful conclusion to the negotiations between Switzerland and the European Union (EU).

Amherd will remain in Berlin until Thursday. Her agenda includes a reception with the German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Thursday morning.
