According to the President of the Swiss Confederation, Viola Amherd, the UN resolutions on the advancement of women are not being sufficiently implemented. "The trend is clearly pointing in the wrong direction," explained the Defense Minister at the UN Security Council in New York.

"Women's participation in peace processes is declining, while violence against women and girls is increasing dramatically - increasingly online," said Amherd on Thursday at the annual session on women, peace and security.

However, research has shown that a peace agreement that includes women and issues particularly relevant to them has a 30 percent higher chance of lasting 15 years or longer. "15 years or longer - that's almost a generation, that's a childhood in peace," said the Federal President.

As Switzerland is chairing the Security Council this month, Amherd chaired the open debate in the Council.
