The Swiss government has signed an agreement to join the European Sky Shield air defence system. The agreement was signed by Defence Minister Viola Amherd at a trilateral meeting of defence ministers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Austria has also joined the initiative. The agreement includes a declaration of neutrality, which excludes participation in international military conflicts. Switzerland is considering participating in the ground-based air defence system (Bodluv) Patriot, which could lead to cost savings through information exchange, operation and training. The European Sky Shield initiative was launched in August 2022 by Germany, an EU and NATO member, and currently includes 17 countries. The initiative is intended to close existing gaps in Europe's air defence system, inspired by Israel's Iron Dome.
