The Arlberg Tunnel in Austria will be closed for several months from April 15. Traffic will be diverted via the Arlberg Pass or over a large area via Germany and Switzerland, as the Austrian highway operator Asfinag announced on Friday.
The tunnel should be reopened to traffic in time for the winter season at the end of November.
The 14-kilometre tunnel, which was opened in 1978, needs to be renovated. Among other things, the road surface and tunnel coating are to be renewed. This is the second long-term closure after 2023. The total investment amounts to 75 million euros, it was reported.
As last year, the regional alternative route is the Arlberg Pass, but this cannot be used by all vehicles. As in 2023, there is a driving ban for trucks with trailers and articulated vehicles, and there are also restrictions for cars with trailers and cyclists. Anyone using the pass may need to be patient. According to Asfinag, this route is used by more than 20,000 cars on peak days.
Large-scale alternative routes are the route via Munich and Rosenheim, via the Gotthard and San Bernardino (Switzerland) or via the Fernpass, provided that the traffic regulations in force there are complied with.
