Four percent of Swiss drivers are driving under the influence of alcohol. These are the findings of the first BFU survey on the subject. Men and French-speaking people are more likely to drink and drive.

People aged 31 and over are more likely to drive under the influence of alcohol than younger drivers and men are more likely to drive under the influence of alcohol than women. This was reported by the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (BFU) on Tuesday. This behavior is more common in French-speaking Switzerland than in German-speaking Switzerland.

People in the 41 to 50 age group are the most likely to drive above the legal limit, and men are significantly more likely to do so than women, the report continued. "At night, one in seven cars is driven by a person under the influence of alcohol, of which a good one in five is over the legal limit," BFU study director Patrizia Hertach was quoted as saying in the press release.

Alcohol is one of the biggest safety risks in road traffic. According to the BFU, on average, alcohol is involved in one in eight serious accidents. Last year, 31 people died in alcohol-related accidents and 506 others were seriously injured.

Together with 14 police forces from German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland, the BFU has investigated how many people drive a car in everyday life after drinking alcohol. 4847 drunk drivers were stopped at random and subjected to an alcohol test.
