The Swiss Federal Roads Office (Astra) expects the Gotthard Road Tunnel to be reopened for traffic this week. Demolition work is set to begin on Tuesday night. Experts are working hard to open the tunnel as soon as possible. The intermediate ceiling will be demolished and replaced over a 25 meter section. Security measures have already begun on Monday afternoon. The cause of the damage is believed to be due to pressure changes in the mountain range, which caused the intermediate ceiling to crack and the subsequent detachment. The Gotthard Road Tunnel was closed on Sunday afternoon due to a technical defect in the intermediate ceiling. The Astra is working to ensure the ventilation in the affected section is secure.
