The state accounts of the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden have closed with a surplus of CHF 11.9 million. According to a statement, the positive result is due in particular to higher tax revenues and lower expenditure on personnel and operating expenses.

The canton announced on Friday that tax revenue from natural persons in 2023 had risen by 2.8 percent year-on-year to CHF 170.6 million. The additional revenue from direct federal taxes amounted to around CHF 6 million.

The absence of distributions of the SNB's net profits had been taken into account in the budget and therefore did not lead to any deviations, the statement continued. In the previous year, the corresponding shares amounted to CHF 25.6 million.

Fewer investments than planned

At CHF 44.6 million, net investments are CHF 15.6 million lower than the budget. "The lower net investments are mainly due to delays in building construction and unutilized loans," the canton wrote in a statement.

Healthcare costs were CHF 3.5 million higher than the budget.

With the overall result of CHF 11.9 million, the balance sheet surplus will rise to CHF 171.8 million at the end of 2023, the canton added.
