Auxiliary method developed for solving quantum problems

A group of researchers has developed the "V-Score" benchmark as a tool for solving quantum problems. It compares how well different quantum methods perform and helps to identify the most difficult quantum systems to solve.

The researchers found that some quantum systems are much easier to solve than others. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) announced on Thursday that current calculation methods have difficulties with difficult quantum problems. The "V-score" combines the energy of a quantum system and the strength of the fluctuations in this energy into one number. The lower the energy and the smaller the fluctuations, the more accurate the solution.

In order to create the "V-Score", the team compiled an extensive data set of quantum problems and carried out simulations with a range of quantum systems, according to EPFL. The benchmarking not only determines which methods are best suited to certain problems, but also in which areas quantum computing could have the greatest impact.

The "V-Score" could help to guide future research efforts. Sectors such as the pharmaceutical and energy industries rely on quantum simulations.
