The strike by the train drivers' union GDL began in parts of Germany on Tuesday evening. Deutsche Bahn's freight services have been on strike since Tuesday evening. From Wednesday morning, it will also be uncomfortable for passengers.
After the start of the train drivers' strike in freight transport, Deutsche Bahn and its passengers prepared for the extension of the industrial action to passenger transport from Wednesday morning. Customers have already been able to view the emergency timetable for long-distance and regional services online, as announced by Deutsche Bahn.
"Due to the limited offer, we advise you to reserve a seat early when traveling on DB's long-distance services," Deutsche Bahn announced on Tuesday. "There will be a greatly reduced number of train journeys on regional services during the GDL strike."
The GDL had already started the strike in freight transport on Tuesday evening. The strike there started as planned at 6 p.m., a GDL spokesperson said on request.
Deutsche Bahn announced that a number of freight trains were on strike and would therefore not be able to reach their destinations. Under its leader Claus Weselsky, the GDL intends to bring large parts of rail traffic to a standstill for around six days. This is the union's fourth and longest strike to date.
The industrial action is set to last until Monday evening, the first time in the current wage dispute that it has spanned an entire weekend. In addition to financial demands, the wage dispute mainly revolves around the issue of reducing weekly working hours for shift workers. The GDL wants to reduce these from 38 to 35 hours with the same salary.
SBB had already announced on Monday that it was currently working on a replacement concept for the Swiss section of the route. The aim is to ensure that domestic traffic is not affected as much as possible.
SBB recommends postponing travel to or through Germany to another time. As part of a special goodwill gesture by Deutsche Bahn, travelers have the option of postponing their journey and using their ticket earlier or later.
