On Wednesday evening, Basel celebrated the eve of the national holiday with a double fireworks display on the Rhine in thundery rain showers. As last year, this was shortened by a third to 16 minutes, but this hardly detracted from the overall impression.
Around 100,000 visitors were expected to attend the celebrations on the Rhine, which lasted until 2 a.m. on the actual national holiday. They lined up on both sides of the Rhine in and around numerous festive restaurants and filled three Rhine bridges. Everyone waited for the climax with the fireworks at 11.00 pm.
Prior to this, a stroke rowing competition was held by the "Fischer-Club Basel" water sports club and water games were performed by the fireboat. The program also included performances by yodelling choirs, alphorn formations and entertainment orchestras in various squares in the city centre.
Towards the climax of the evening with the fireworks, rain clouds and light rain began to gather.
The private setting off of fireworks is only permitted in Basel on July 31 and August 1 from 18:00 to 01:00. Within a radius of 200 meters from hospitals and zoos, it is completely prohibited. According to local reports, most people adhered to these regulations.
