Basel ophthalmologist Botond Roska and his research partner José-Alain Sahel from Pittsburgh have been awarded the Wolf Prize for Medicine. They were honored for their work on restoring sight in blind patients, as announced by the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel on Tuesday.
The Wolf Prize for Medicine is endowed with 100,000 dollars.
The two researchers and university professors have been working together since 2001. Their work focuses on the optogenetic restoration of vision - a technique that generates light-sensitive cells using algae-derived genes to treat degenerative retinal diseases.
The award winners work at the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB), among others. There, basic researchers and clinicians work together to deepen our understanding of the visual process and its diseases and to develop new therapies for vision loss.
The IOB began operations in 2018. The founding partners are the University Hospital Basel, the University of Basel and Novartis. The Canton of Basel-Stadt has provided the institute with substantial financial support.
