At the invitation of the Austrian State Secretary for Art and Culture Andrea Mayer (Greens), all German-speaking counterparts came to Vienna on Monday. Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider represented Switzerland.
The focus of the meeting was on the public and their participation in art and culture. Studies have shown that participation in culture is unevenly distributed within society depending on education and income. The Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) referred to this in a press release on Monday.
At their meeting in Vienna, the ministers agreed that this unequal use of culture is "an important challenge for politics". In Switzerland, the promotion of participation has been "a central element of the federal government's cultural policy" since 2016, explained Baume-Schneider in Vienna. This is of central importance, especially "for the four-language Switzerland with its different cultures and strong regional identities".
According to Baume-Schneider, the cultural message adopted by the Federal Council on March 1 provides for "a further strengthening" of amateur culture, which is an important area for participation.
The first meeting of this kind took place in Luxembourg last year. Culture Minister Eric Thill came to Vienna from there on Monday. His counterpart Isabelle Weykmans is Minister for Culture and Sport, Employment and Media of the German-speaking Community of Belgium, while Liechtenstein was represented by Manuel Frick, Government Councillor for Society and Culture. Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth traveled from Germany.
