Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider has defended herself against accusations that her move from the Department of Justice to the Department of Home Affairs after just one year was an escape. "It is by no means an escape. It is an opportunity."
Baume-Schneider said this on Friday in response to a question from journalists in Bern. She is very much looking forward to the Department of Home Affairs. She has a "great interest" in social and cultural issues and brings "a lot of professional experience" with her. "The Department of Home Affairs is close to my heart," said Baume-Schneider.
She is delighted to be taking on responsibility for many new dossiers. She wanted to seize this opportunity. When asked about the many unfinished jobs and difficult dossiers, the designated Minister of the Interior said: "I'm not looking for the easy part."
No further questions on the change of department were answered before the media conference on the EU dossier.
On Thursday evening, the Federal Council unexpectedly announced that Justice Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider would be relinquishing her department after just one year and moving to the Department of Home Affairs. She is leaving the Justice Department to her party colleague and Federal Council newcomer Beat Jans.
Observers and bourgeois politicians commented on the Social Democrat's move as an "escape", among other things. The Jura native sometimes had difficulties getting her proposals on the asylum dossier accepted by the government.
