Beat Jans, the Basel government president, spoke to the media on Friday about the possible candidacy of his Basel party colleague Mustafa Atici for the Federal Council. Jans said he was looking forward to the selection process and that he and Atici were good friends. National Councilor Mustafa Atici was not present at the media conference. Lisa Mathys, president of the SP Basel-Stadt, said they were in contact with Atici and that multiple candidacies were possible. Jans said that issues such as declining purchasing power, climate change, decarbonization, and Switzerland's relationship with the EU, especially in light of the war in Ukraine, were important to him. He said he would not be a "locomotive" if elected to the Federal Council, but part of a team. Jans also commented on the image of his Basel party colleague Eva Herzog, who failed to be elected to the Federal Council last year, saying that her supposedly unapproachable image had been "exaggerated", which he regretted.
