The Bernina road can be reopened without time restrictions on Friday afternoon after rockfalls. For the time being, however, only one lane will be open, as the Canton of Graubünden's civil engineering office announced on Thursday.
The single-lane section on the pass road will be opened on Friday at 4 p.m., according to the communiqué. Traffic will be guided by traffic lights. Prior to this, 40-metre-long rockfall protection nets will be installed above the buried road on Thursday and Friday morning. Further work can then be carried out during ongoing operations.
The clearing of the rockfall on October 26 was initially delayed several times due to rainfall. Due to the water-saturated ground, new debris had repeatedly reached the road.
Since Tuesday, road users have been able to use the route during daylight hours. Alternative connections to the southern Graubünden valley of Puschlav led via Bergell and Livigno in Italy. These involved a great deal of additional time.
