A rare blue diamond has fetched 39.5 million francs at an auction in Geneva. According to a spokeswoman for Christie's auction house, the 17.61-carat gemstone called "Bleu Royal" is one of the ten most expensive jewels ever sold at auction. The winning bid was placed on Tuesday by an anonymous private collector who prevailed against two other bidders.

According to Christie's, the "Bleu Royal" set on a ring is the largest flawless diamond of bright blue color ever offered at auction. The estimated value of the approximately 13 millimeter long and 8 millimeter wide teardrop-shaped stone ranged between 31.6 million and 45 million Swiss francs. It was not disclosed who sold the ring. The "Bleu Royal" had been part of an "important private collection" for the past 50 years, it was said.
