Dozens of bodies have been buried in a mass grave on the grounds of the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip, according to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health.
The burial of around 180 already decomposed bodies and recently deceased patients had begun in one of the courtyards of the Shifa clinic, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health in Gaza announced on Tuesday. The statements could not immediately be independently verified. There is fierce fighting between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian extremists around the hospital.
On Monday, the UN emergency aid office OCHA, citing the Ministry of Health of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, had reported around 100 bodies on the grounds of the Shifa Hospital that could not be buried. According to the Ministry of Health, seven newborns had died by Monday after the oxygen equipment was switched off. The lack of fuel had led to the death of a total of 34 patients, it said. This information could not be independently verified either.
The largest hospital in the Gaza Strip is not out of action, contrary to the information provided by Palestinian authorities at the weekend, as the World Health Organization (WHO) announced in Geneva on Tuesday. Despite the power outage and attacks, the staff at Shifa Hospital are doing everything in their power to care for around 700 remaining seriously ill patients, the WHO spokeswoman said, referring to local health authorities. Within the past 24 hours, 20 people had died.
