The UK's new Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged long-term support for Ukraine. Military aid amounting to 3 billion pounds (around 3.5 billion Swiss francs) per year is to be provided "until 2030/31 and for as long as necessary", the government announced at the NATO summit. Starmer is thus following the course set by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

In the coming weeks, the British also want to deliver a new package of artillery and 90 additional Brimstone missiles, which were originally developed for anti-tank aircraft. They appear to be deployed from the ground in Ukraine.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a war of aggression by Russia for almost two and a half years with the help of Western weapons. The Ukrainian trenches are the front line of defense in the Euro-Atlantic region, according to the press release.

"NATO was founded by the generation that defeated fascism. They understood not only the value of our strength, but also the strength of our values," said Starmer. These values are now under attack once again.

Russian President Vladimir Putin needs to hear a clear message from the summit - "a message of unity and determination that we will support Ukraine with everything necessary for as long as it takes to preserve our common values and our common security."
