The Swiss road network is being expanded today with an important new structure. Federal Councillor Albert Rösti (SVP) will inaugurate the third Gubrist tunnel on the Zurich North bypass. This is intended to relieve the bottleneck towards Bern. The "Gubrist jam" has been one of the regular traffic reports of Swiss radio stations for 350 days a year. The North bypass is one of the most heavily used motorway sections in Switzerland with more than 120,000 vehicles per day. At 11am, Federal Councillor Albert Rösti (SVP) will officially open the new six-lane tunnel. At the same time, the renovation of the two existing two-lane tunnels, which have been in use since 1985, will begin. The middle tunnel, currently used in the direction of Bern, will be closed for renovation for about two years. The renovation of the tunnel in the direction of St. Gallen is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. When all three Gubrist tunnels are open, there will be more lanes available on the Zurich North bypass than today.
