Passengers on public transport should also be able to pay for tickets with cash in the future. At best, prepaid cards should serve as a simple alternative to cash. After the National Council, the Council of States has also spoken out in favor of this.

On Monday, it tacitly adopted a motion by Manuela Weichelt (Greens/ZG) aimed at all subsidized transport companies in Switzerland. The Federal Council should now draw up a bill or other suitable measures to ensure that these companies also accept cash or a simple alternative that works without a smartphone.

According to the law, everyone is still required to accept coins and banknotes as payment, says Weichelt. In addition, consideration must be given to those who do not have access to electronic means of payment.

The Federal Council requested that the motion be accepted. Recently, the Bernese cantonal parliament also called on the cantonal government to lobby the rail and bus company BLS to continue using cash machines.
