Swiss Transport Minister Albert Rösti and Italian Deputy Transport Minister Edoardo Rixi signed an agreement on cross-border, regional bus services in both countries in Rome on Thursday. Cabotage is now permitted.
The bilateral agreement will enable more attractive offers in public regional bus services across borders, announced the Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) at the signing ceremony. According to a Uvek spokesperson, the innovation should come into force in the course of 2025.
Thanks to the authorization of cabotage, passengers on connections between Italy and Switzerland could board and alight on both sides of the border. In the case of Italy, this will apply in future to bus connections between Ticino and Lombardy, between Lower Valais and Aosta (I) and between the Engadine and Chiavenna (I).
Italy is the fourth neighboring country with such an agreement. Switzerland already has similar agreements with Germany, Austria and France.
