Retour au fil d'actualité

According to former Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, instead of a peace conference for Ukraine, we should be talking about preliminary negotiations. This is because diplomacy cannot get off the ground in the current situation, said the former foreign minister.

Both parties, Ukraine and Russia, still believe they can win the war, Calmy-Rey said in an interview with Tamedia published on Saturday. Opinions differed widely as to how the parties could be persuaded to end their hostilities.

But interim steps are possible, said the former SP Federal Councillor. She was thinking, for example, of the grain agreement, the exchange of prisoners and the safety of nuclear power plants.

Diplomatic steps towards a peace solution are also conceivable without Russia. In her view, negotiations should not be limited to the ten points of the Ukrainian peace plan. Switzerland must define those points where common denominators can be found.
