On Thursday, the Fribourg Grand Council approved a decree for the financial support of the 2026 Ice Hockey World Championships in Switzerland. The contribution amounts to 3.76 million francs. Fribourg is the venue.

The cantonal parliament approved the decree by 72 votes to 10 with 5 abstentions. Sports Minister Romain Collaud spoke of a major event: "Hence the investment in terms of finance and personnel," he said. "It's a shame that Switzerland is playing in Zurich," regretted Hubert Dafflon, member of the cantonal parliament.

The total amount already includes a commitment credit of CHF 2.04 million, which is intended for the granting of financial aid, as the State Council explained in its message.

The remaining 1.72 million will be provided in the form of logistical and personnel support: Police, civil defense, permits and premises.

The city of Fribourg is contributing CHF 1.4 million, while the local ice hockey club HC Fribourg-Gottéron is contributing CHF 1.3 million. Fribourg will host a total of 30 games, including two quarter-finals, from May 15 to 31, 2026.
