The canton of Obwalden recorded a slight surplus of CHF 200,000 in its 2023 income statement. The reason for the result is extraordinary bookings such as the release of funds and financial policy reserves.

The operating result of the income statement shows an expense surplus of CHF 0.15 million, as can be seen from the canton's statement on Friday. The budgeted figure was 0.36 million francs.

The extraordinary result includes depreciation of the Sarneraa valley flood protection project of CHF 2.76 million and a release of the financial policy reserve of CHF 2.5 million. Income was also generated with the release of the "Family allowances in agriculture" fund and the release of provisions.

Tax revenue from natural persons has increased, but is below budget. According to the press release, this is compensated for by additional revenue from legal entities, property gains tax and taxes on capital compensation.

Expenditure on premium reductions, hospital care and refugees from Ukraine had less of an impact on the state budget than expected, according to reports. For example, as in previous years, the budget for premium reductions was not exhausted. The federal government also allocated fewer people seeking protection to the canton.

In the investment account, the canton calculated total expenditure of CHF 70.6 million and net investments of CHF 20.7 million. The budgeted figures were CHF 86.1 million and CHF 30.3 million respectively. Investments were lower in the areas of emergency services, cantonal roads, building construction and real estate.
