The canton of St. Gallen has submitted an application to the federal government to shoot the entire Calfeisental pack. In August 2023, the authorities already authorized the killing of three pups of the wolf pack due to sheep kills.
The aim of the canton of St. Gallen is to tolerate only those wolves that behave unproblematically and accept herd protection measures, the canton wrote in a press release on Monday. However, the Calfeisental pack has already caused major damage to sheep.
In order to slow down the further rapid spread of wolves and improve the coexistence of humans and wolves, the Calfeisental pack, which is "particularly damaging", should be eliminated as far as possible, the press release continued.
The shooting of three pups from the pack approved last August has not yet been carried out. After being regularly detected in the Calfeisen valley on the border with the canton of Graubünden during the rearing of the pups, the pack has now become mobile and is moving more widely.
