A 32-year-old car thief evaded a police checkpoint in Näfels GL on Saturday morning and fled at a massively excessive speed up to Urnerboden - the summit of the Klausen Pass. The police were able to arrest him there.

The 32-year-old had stolen the car the day before and drove despite having his ID revoked, the Glarus cantonal police wrote in a statement on Saturday. During his escape, he made several daring traffic maneuvers and also collided with another vehicle.

The police lost sight of him in the meantime, according to an inquiry from the Keystone-SDA news agency. It was only thanks to tips from the public that the officers finally managed to track the man down. The arrest was finally made in the fugitive's room in the village of Urnerboden.

Distance in half the time

According to the police, the chase lasted around 30 minutes. The almost 40-kilometre stretch between Näfels and Urnerboden takes just under an hour at normal speed.

The driver is now in police custody and had to undergo a blood and urine test. The police are looking for witnesses.
