Casino Schaffhausen does not have to close its doors at the end of 2024: It can remain open until the new casino in nearby Winterthur opens its doors.

As the opening of the new casino in Winterthur has been delayed and it is not expected to open until the end of 2025, the Federal Council has extended the existing license for Casino Schaffhausen until the end of March 2026 at the latest, as announced on Friday.

The license would have expired at the end of 2024. In 2022, Casino Schaffhausen decided not to submit an application when the new casino license was put out to tender; its operator - Swiss Casinos Holding AG - planned to relocate to Winterthur.

The Federal Council justifies its decision by stating that the extension of the license will allow regulated and secure gaming to be offered to the population in the Schaffhausen area for the time being and generate income of around six million francs for the AHV and the canton of Schaffhausen. In addition, the staff of Casino Schaffhausen, which is to be taken over by Casino Winterthur, can continue to be employed until the move.

There will be no parallel operation of Schaffhausen and Winterthur. However, the Federal Council intends to decide in 2028 on how to proceed with the Schaffhausen concession. It has not yet awarded a concession for the planned Schaffhausen zone for the years from 2025 to 2044 "due to a lack of valid candidates".
