Addressing the UN Security Council, Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis called for efforts to achieve peace in the region to be maintained despite the violence in the Middle East. He reiterated the need for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
Cassis called for the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages abducted by Hamas before the most powerful body of the United Nations.
"The violence seems to know no bounds," he said. Despite two Council resolutions, not all hostages had been released, civilians were being killed on a daily basis and international humanitarian law was still being violated.
Without a political consensus in the region, there will be no lasting peace, said Cassis. Switzerland is prepared to bring the key players in the conflict together, he explained.
