For Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, it is unlikely that a Russian delegation will be invited to the Bürgenstock after all. However, the aim is to get Russia on board for the further peace process and for the next conference.
The non-invitation of Russia to the Bürgenstock Conference was a combination of two elements, Cassis told the media in Bern on Monday. "On the one hand, Russia's clear rejection before the invitations were sent out, and on the other, Ukraine, which is not yet ready to have Russia there."
Cassis said that he would fight for Russia's participation until the eve of the conference. However, this plan is hardly realistic. "We will have to make another attempt afterwards, perhaps for a second conference in a different country," said Cassis.
Everyone involved agreed that Russia would have to be brought on board sooner or later in order to start a successful peace process. When this point in time will be reached is controversial. "Opinions diverge here," said Cassis.
