Logistics company Ceva Logistics is laying off 212 permanent employees and 138 temporary workers, according to a statement issued by the Unia trade union on Monday. The reason given for the job cuts is a contract with fashion retailer Zalando that was not renewed.

According to the union, Ceva Logistics is taking over returns logistics for Zalando at the Neuendorf site in the canton of Solothurn. As Zalando has now terminated its contract with the company, a total of 350 people will lose their jobs, according to Unia.

According to a spokeswoman, the union has received a letter of resignation from an employee. Ceva Logistics itself has not yet responded to an inquiry from the news agency AWP.

According to Unia, Ceva Logistics is now considering closing the Neuendorf site at the end of the year after the contract with Zalando was not extended. Although Ceva has announced a consultation period, it is unclear for the affected employees what the next steps will be, according to the Unia press release.

Meanwhile, the union also sharply criticizes Zalando. The "fast fashion giant" must also assume social responsibility, as it has been profiting from "cheap" employees in Neuendorf for years.
