According to a survey conducted by the Swiss Commercial Association in 2023, commercial apprenticeships were very popular among apprenticeship graduates. 92.8 percent of the almost 4,000 respondents rated the training positively and felt well prepared for the job market.

At the time of the second survey wave in November 2023, more than 70% of the KV graduates surveyed were employed, as announced by the Swiss Commercial Association on Tuesday. This represented an increase of 4.8 percentage points compared to the previous year.

At the time of the survey, around 21 percent of respondents were in a non-employment situation after their apprenticeship, such as further training, a language course or military service. In turn, 5.2 percent were actually looking for a job in November 2023.

Almost half of the participants stated that they had to work overtime every week during their basic training - an average of 2 hours per week. Around 10 percent even reported working overtime on a daily basis. A further 25 percent stated that they would not have been able to complete their work assignments without overtime.

This is one of the reasons why the Kaufmännischer Verband is calling on companies to fulfill their duty of care. According to the association, the level of entry-level wages, the lack of company participation in school material costs and "bring-your-own-device" regulations are also problematic.

"Young people must not decide against a commercial apprenticeship because they don't have the means to afford a laptop", as Svenja Albrecht, education policy project manager at the Kaufmännischer Verband, is quoted as saying in the press release.

With around 12,500 graduates per year, the commercial apprenticeship is the most popular basic training program in Switzerland, the press release continued. The survey has been conducted annually since 2006.
