Strategically important steel and aluminum production companies are to be relieved of electricity costs. The responsible committee of the National Council wants to waive part of the grid usage fees for these companies for four years.
The National Council's Committee for the Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy (Urek-N) decided this by 13 votes to 11 with one abstention, as reported by the parliamentary services on Tuesday. Larger steel and aluminum production companies are to be granted staggered relief from grid usage fees.
Specifically, the grid usage fees are to be reduced by 50 percent in the first year, 37.5 percent in the second year, 25 percent in the third year and 12.5 percent in the fourth year. The discount is to be paid for by all electricity consumers in a spirit of solidarity.
The majority of the Commission justified the measure with the importance of these companies for the circular economy. Conditions apply to the companies, for example they must produce in Switzerland.
