In the presence of the State Secretary for Migration, Christine Schraner Burgener, a new federal asylum center was opened in Balerna TI on Friday. It offers space for a maximum of 350 people and replaces two temporary shelters in southern Switzerland.
This center represents a new beginning, said Micaela Crippa, head of the Ticino and Central Switzerland asylum region at the Federal Office for Migration (SEM). The last "four long years" have been full of challenges for the staff of the two previous temporary asylum centers.
The head of the SEM, Schraner Burgener, who is leaving at the end of the year, emphasized that the challenges remain great. The SEM is expecting 30,000 asylum applications for the current year.
The canton of Ticino is a hotspot for Swiss asylum policy. Last year, cantonal and local authorities repeatedly voiced criticism and called for better security measures. Justice Minister Beat Jans promised various concrete improvements during a visit in February.
